Interview with Jeff Reidel on a Wolf of Wall Street-Inspired Editorial

We caught up with Jeff Reidel about his recent project based on the hit movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Jeff photographed a fashion editorial for Men’s Journal called “The Return of the Power Suit (How a Top Dog Suits Up)”. View all images here.

What is the concept behind Wolf Story?

The concept of the shoot is based somewhat loosely on the book and movie entitled The Wolf of Wall Street. The title alone evokes an appropriate imagery of the era of modern capitalism and the dictatorial and predatory control of the big banks over the the lives of vast population of the US (and internationally). So it lends itself rather elegantly to the notion of a wolf dressed in the height of the upcoming season’s business suit.

What were the challenges you faced during the production?

I thought about shooting it with live animals and we discussed it some at with the magazine but ended up shooting it all with taxidermy (sorry to disappoint), but in the end this is the only way we could have carried it thru technically as well as we did. It required obviously some very high quality taxidermy.

How did Impact Digital help you achieve your vision?

The main issue with the wolf heads on human bodies was always going to be about perfect perspective and a seamless blending of necks to the collars etc. It’s not as easy as it might seem. The team understood the critical nature of the most subtle nuances and worked with me to make it right.

What do you do for fun when you aren’t shooting?

I’ve recently been given a new lease on life through back surgery so getting back to active life again slowly hopefully thru surfing and biking as well as being a dad.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration usually in books, great stories or reading about momentous periods of history and great historical figures. I feel like I carry it around with me when I move about and look at things.
